Brod Fortress
The Brod Fortress in Slavonski Brod is an impressive example of Baroque military architecture. As a former border fortification on the Sava River, it played a crucial role in the 18th century and is now an accessible cultural monument in Croatia.
History+
Between 1715 and 1780, the Brod Fortress was constructed as an imperial and royal border fortification. It was built on the then military frontier along the Sava River and served as a strategically important crossing point between the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary. Commissioned by Prince Eugene of Savoy, the structure, designed to accommodate 4,000 soldiers and 150 cannons, was primarily built from bricks due to the lack of suitable stone in the vicinity. The star-shaped fortress included three lines of defense and was surrounded by moats. In 1860, it lost its military significance and was abandoned. After 1945, a part of the complex served as a barracks for the Yugoslav People's Army until 1991.
