Fortress of Doboj

The origins of Doboj Fortress date back to the 10th or 11th century, when a first fortification was built on this site. In the early 13th century, it was expanded into a fortress and underwent further enlargement in 1415. After its conquest by the Turks in 1476, the complex was further developed by them. In the Austro-Turkish War of 1697, the fortress was plundered and burned by Prince Eugene of Savoy and his Austrian troops on their way to Sarajevo. Only twenty years later, in 1717, the Austrians again conquered the fortress and burned it down. In 1740, the Turks rebuilt the fortress. Its military significance waned in the late 19th century as the Turks were pushed back from the Balkans during the Austro-Turkish Wars. In 1878, Austro-Hungarian troops captured the fortress after clashes with the local population. At the beginning of the 20th century, the fortress finally lost its military function.

Doboj Fortress is located in the city of Doboj, in the Doboj district, in Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It stands at an elevation of approximately 184 meters above sea level.
