The Dömitz Fortress in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern stands strategically located on the Elbe River in the town of the same name. It is considered the largest fortress in Mecklenburg.

History+

Duke Johann Albrecht I of Mecklenburg commissioned the construction of the Dömitz Fortress between 1559 and 1565 to secure Mecklenburg's southwestern borders and the important Elbe crossings. An existing castle was significantly expanded for this purpose. The complex played a crucial role in the Thirty Years' War as a base for various factions, including Tilly and Wallenstein. In the course of its defense, the entire town of Dömitz was burned down in 1635. Later, in 1809, the first skirmishes of the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon took place here.
