Fortress Dresden
The Dresden Fortress, a defense system, circularly enclosed the Inner Old Town of Dresden. Its origins date back to the late 12th century, with the first documented mention of the fortifications in 1299. Today, parts of this complex are preserved and accessible to visitors.
History+
The medieval city wall, which existed even before its first mention in 1299, was reinforced in the 14th century and during the Hussite Wars. In 1427, a second outer wall with a Zwinger was built. In the mid-15th century, these structures were supplemented with bastion towers and additional wall towers. From 1546, Duke Moritz had the medieval fortification expanded into a modern system based on Italian-Dutch models, with Caspar Voigt von Wierandt providing the plans.
