Fortress Ehrenbreitstein

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, an imposing Prussian complex, majestically overlooks the Moselle estuary in Koblenz. It is an outstanding example of European fortress architecture and is considered one of the largest preserved fortresses of its kind.
History+
The history of Ehrenbreitstein dates back to the 10th century, when a first castle was built here, which later came into the possession of the Archbishops of Trier. In the 16th century, the complex was expanded into a fortress to meet the demands of modern warfare technology. Among other things, the famous siege cannon "Greif" was cast here. During the Thirty Years' War, the fortress changed hands several times. At the end of the 18th century, after its capture by French revolutionary troops, the baroque fortress was blown up in 1801. Between 1817 and 1828, it was rebuilt as part of the Prussian Fortress of Koblenz. Under the direction of Carl Schnitzler, a citadel was created that was militarily used until 1918 and was considered impregnable.
