Fredrikstad Fortress
Fredrikstad Fortress, a remarkably well-preserved historical structure, is located in Norway and once served as a strategic defensive point. Its complete preservation makes it a unique testament to military architecture in the region.
History+
The construction of Fredrikstad Fortress took place between 1663 and 1666 under the direction of Willem Coucheron and his son Anthony. The building was commissioned by the Danish-Norwegian King Frederick II. Lieutenant Colonel Johan Eberhard Speckhan assumed command as the first commandant on January 6, 1662. In 1716, the fortress played a crucial role in the Battle of Dynekilen when Peder Tordenskjold attacked the Swedish fleet from here. During the Swedish-Norwegian War in 1814, the fortress was attacked and had to capitulate on August 4, 1814, under the command of Nils Christian Frederik Hals. Although officially abandoned in 1903, it continued to serve as a garrison. The remaining military facilities were finally closed in 2002.
