History+

The origins of Galle Fort date back to 1588 when the Portuguese began its construction. In the 17th century, from 1649 onwards, the Dutch took over the site and significantly expanded it. These fortifications shaped its current appearance. Even after more than 423 years, the fort maintains its well-preserved condition thanks to continuous restoration work.
