History+
The origins of the fortifications in Germersheim date back to 1792, when the French took over the city and erected new defensive structures. These were reinforced in 1814 after the Bavarian takeover. The German Confederation recognized Germersheim's strategic importance in 1815 as a rallying point for troops in the event of a French attack. Initial survey work began in 1818, and the final decision to build a fortress was made in 1832. Under the direction of Friedrich von Schmauß, construction began on June 30, 1834, with the excavation of the main ditch. The foundation stone was laid on October 18 of the same year.
