History+
Already inhabited in the Stone Age, Hohenasperg was a Celtic princely seat with a refuge castle around 500 BC. After the victory of the Franks over the Alemanni around 500 AD, it became a Frankish manorial seat and assembly place. Asperg was first mentioned in a document in 819. In the 13th century, the site gained importance with the founding of the town of Hohenasperg. From 1535, the hill was developed into a fortress. During the Thirty Years' War, Württemberg-Protestant and Swedish troops defended the fortress in 1634/35 against imperial besiegers but eventually had to surrender it. After the war, it returned to Württemberg possession.
