Fortress Ilok

The origins of Ilok Fortress date back to the 15th century, when it was constructed by Nicholas of Ilok, a Croatian viceroy and king of Bosnia. In the 16th century, the complex came under Ottoman rule. Following the victory over the Ottomans at the Battle of Vienna in 1683, Emperor Leopold I granted the fortress, along with lands and the title of Duke of Syrmia, to Livio Odescalchi. The noble family Odescalchi, which included Pope Innocent XI, owned the fortress for the next two centuries and had it rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century. In 1945, the fortress was nationalized by Yugoslav authorities, and after restoration, it was opened to visitors in 2010.
