History+

The Ingolstadt State Fortress underwent several expansion phases. After the fortress was destroyed by Napoleonic troops in 1801, reconstruction as a neoclassical complex began in 1828 under King Ludwig I. Despite other recommendations, he chose Ingolstadt as the site for the new royal Bavarian main state fortress. In the course of these construction works and subsequent extensions, the first outer fort belt was also planned.
