History+

The Ingolstadt State Fortress underwent expansion phases, starting with its medieval fortifications. From 1537, Duke Wilhelm IV had Ingolstadt developed into a state fortress. A Renaissance fortress emerged with earthworks, moats, and masonry bastions such as the Ziegel-, Harder-, and Kugelbastei. After the Thirty Years' War, the facilities were expanded and reinforced between 1654 and 1662 under Christoph Heidemann, even though Bavaria was devastated at the time. Additional bastions and ravelins were constructed, and the Hardertor was walled up. In the War of the Spanish Succession in 1704 and the War of the Austrian Succession in 1745, the fortress played a role, surrendering without a fight in 1745.
