History+

The Ingolstadt Fortress, which includes the Exerzierhalle, was a defensive installation of the Bavarian army. Its history can be divided into five main phases, beginning with the reconstruction of medieval fortifications. From 1537, Ingolstadt was developed into a state fortress under Duke Wilhelm IV, underscoring its strategic importance on key trade routes and the Danube. After the Thirty Years' War, the facilities were further strengthened between 1654 and 1662 under Christoph Heidemann, despite Bavaria being heavily devastated at the time. During the War of the Spanish Succession in 1704 and the War of the Austrian Succession in 1745, the fortress played a role in sieges. After a period of decline, the fortress was destroyed by Napoleonic troops in 1800.
