Fortress Ingolstadt-Kasematten der Fronte Butler

The casemates of Fronte Butler are a part of the former Ingolstadt State Fortress, which once surrounded the Bavarian city. These fortifications, located within the inner fortress ring, are now integrated into the modern urban landscape.
History+
The Ingolstadt State Fortress underwent several expansion phases. From 1537, Duke Wilhelm IV had Ingolstadt developed into a state fortress due to its location at trade routes and the Danube bridge. A Renaissance fortress with brick earthworks, moats, and bastions was created. After the Thirty Years' War, the facilities were expanded and reinforced between 1654 and 1662 under Christoph Heidemann. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the fortress was besieged in 1704, but the siege was lifted. In 1745, the garrison surrendered without a fight during the War of the Austrian Succession. Under Elector Karl Theodor, the fortress fell into disrepair due to lack of funds.
