History+

The Ingolstadt State Fortress, to which Outwork E belongs, was a defensive complex of the Bavarian Army. Its development began with the expansion of medieval fortifications. From 1537, Duke Wilhelm IV initiated the transformation of Ingolstadt into a state fortress to secure its strategic location on important trade routes and the Danube. After the Thirty Years' War, the fortifications were reinforced between 1654 and 1662 under Christoph Heidemann. In 1800, the fortress was destroyed by Napoleonic troops. Its reconstruction as a Neoclassical fortress began in 1828 under Michael von Streiter and later Peter von Becker, with Ingolstadt being designated as Bavaria's new main state fortress by order of Ludwig I. Outwork E is a relic of this fortress history.
