History+

The Ingolstadt State Fortress, to which the New Armory belongs, underwent several expansion phases. From 1537, Duke Wilhelm IV had Ingolstadt developed into a state fortress due to its strategic importance and control over the Danube. A Renaissance fortress with masonry earthworks and bastions was created. After the Thirty Years' War, the fortress was further strengthened and expanded between 1654 and 1662 under Christoph Heidemann. In the War of the Spanish Succession in 1704, Ingolstadt was besieged, but the siege was lifted. In 1745, the fortress surrendered without a fight in the War of the Austrian Succession.
