History+
The Ingolstadt State Fortress, to which the Pionier Kaserne belongs, evolved from medieval city fortifications and was expanded in several phases. Duke Wilhelm IV began developing it into a state fortress in 1537. After the Thirty Years' War, the facilities were reinforced and expanded between 1654 and 1662 under Christoph Heidemann. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the fortress was besieged in 1704, and in 1745, the French garrison surrendered without a fight in the War of the Austrian Succession. Under Napoleon, the fortress was destroyed starting in 1800.
