History+

The Ingolstadt State Fortress, a fortification system of the Bavarian Army, was built around the city in several phases. After its destruction by Napoleonic troops in 1801, the reconstruction of the Neoclassical fortress began in 1828. Under the direction of Michael von Streiter and later Peter von Becker, it became one of the most expensive construction projects during the reign of Ludwig I. The Baur Tower was part of the bridgehead fortification and was realized on the northern side of the Danube according to Becker's polygonal system.
