History+

The Ingolstadt State Fortress, which includes Stützpunktwerk IV, evolved from the medieval city fortifications. From 1537, Duke Wilhelm IV had Ingolstadt expanded into a state fortress due to its strategic location and control over the Danube bridge. Masonry earthworks with moats and bastions were constructed. After the Thirty Years' War, the Renaissance fortress works were strengthened and expanded between 1654 and 1662 under Christoph Heidemann. The fortress played a role in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1704 and the War of the Austrian Succession in 1745, but fell into disrepair under Elector Karl Theodor.
