History+

The Ingolstadt State Fortress, an installation of the Bavarian Army, underwent several expansion phases, starting with the reinforcement of medieval fortifications. From 1537, Duke Wilhelm IV had Ingolstadt developed into a state fortress. After the Thirty Years' War, the facilities were strengthened between 1654 and 1662 under Christoph Heidemann. The fortress played a role in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1704 and the War of the Austrian Succession in 1745, but was surrendered without a fight to Napoleon's troops in 1800 and subsequently destroyed.
