History+
The Ingolstadt State Fortress, to which Intermediate Work Rosenschwaig belongs, was a defensive installation of the Bavarian Army. Its development encompassed several phases, starting with the expansion of the medieval fortification in the 16th century under Duke Wilhelm IV and Reinhard Graf Solms. After the Thirty Years' War, the fortress was further strengthened under Elector Ferdinand Maria and Christoph Heidemann. In the 19th century, after its destruction by Napoleonic troops, it was rebuilt as a Neoclassical fortress under Ludwig I, Michael von Streiter, and Peter von Becker. Later, a first ring of outworks and finally the outer fort belt were constructed, which includes Intermediate Work Rosenschwaig. This was built starting in 1875 due to advancing artillery technology and the need for a greater range of defensive installations.
