In the Albanian capital, Tirana, is the Fortress of Justinian, also known as Tirana Castle. It is a relic from the Byzantine era and marks a point where important trade routes once intersected.
History+
The origins of the fortress date back to before the year 1300. It emerged during the Byzantine era and served as a strategic hub where the main east-west and north-south routes converged.
On site+
Today, mainly a six-meter-high Ottoman-era wall, partially covered in vines, remains of the Fortress of Justinian. Recently uncovered wall foundations are planned to be integrated into the pedestrianized street.
