Küstrin Fortress-Bastion Brandenburg

The origins of the fortification at the confluence of the Oder and Warta rivers date back to the 13th century. After being inherited by Johann von Brandenburg-Küstrin in 1535, Küstrin was elevated to a residential city. Between 1535 and 1537, the castle was built, followed by the construction of the fortress from 1537. Initially equipped with earthworks, these were reinforced with masonry from 1553 to 1568 due to flood damage. In the 17th century, Küstrin Fortress was considered one of the strongest in Germany. The Bastion Brandenburg was built between 1631 and 1688, as the Swedes and later Elector Frederick William further expanded the fortress. It was located on the right bank of the Oder between the King and Philipp bastions. During the Seven Years' War, the fortress withstood a Russian siege in 1758. During the Napoleonic Wars, it was occupied by the French from 1806 to 1814 before being blockaded by Russian and Prussian troops in 1813/14. In the 19th century, the fortress was modernized to withstand advancing artillery development. Its military use ended in 1920 after World War I. In World War II, Küstrin was again declared a fortress in 1945 and suffered severe destruction. After the war, many parts of the fortress were demolished or blown up for material recovery. Since the 1990s, parts of the complex have been undergoing restoration.

The Küstrin Fortress-Bastion Brandenburg is located in Kostrzyn (Küstrin) in the Lubuskie Voivodeship, in northwestern Poland, at an elevation of approximately 13 m above sea level.
