Kufstein Fortress, a medieval complex, stands on a rock directly on the Inn River and is the landmark of the city of Kufstein in Tyrol, Austria.

History+

First documented in 1205 as “Castrum Caofstein,” Kufstein Fortress was then owned by the Bishops of Regensburg. From 1415, Duke Ludwig the Bearded ordered the fortifications to be strengthened. In 1504, the later Emperor Maximilian I besieged and conquered the site, subsequently having it extensively rebuilt and expanded into a fortress.
