History+

The origins of Kyrenia Fortress lie in the 7th century, when the first fortifications were built. In the 10th century, these were expanded by the Byzantines. Another phase of expansion occurred in the 16th century under Venetian rule, particularly in the context of conflicts with the Ottomans. Later, the fortress served as a prison for the Turks before being transformed into a tourist attraction.
