The Fortress Liège-Fort d'Aubin-Neufchâteau, a defensive structure in the Belgian province of Liège, was part of the extended ring of fortifications around the city of Liège and played a role in the military conflicts of the 20th century.
History+
The first fortresses around Liège were built between 1880 and 1890 under the direction of General Henri Alexis Brialmont. These early forts, located approximately seven kilometers from the city center, were constructed from concrete and equipped with the most modern weaponry of their time. During World War I, they were initially considered impregnable but quickly succumbed to German attacks and shelling by the "Big Bertha," with Fort Loncin exploding. In the interwar period, eight of the forts located to the south, east, and north were rebuilt, while the western installations were decommissioned.
