Fortifications of Liège-Fort d'Embourg

The first modern fortifications around Liège, including Fort d'Embourg, were constructed between 1880 and 1890 at the initiative of Belgian General Henri Alexis Brialmont. These forts, located approximately seven kilometers from the city center, were built using the then-innovative material concrete and equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry. In World War I, the forts were initially considered impregnable but were quickly overcome by German attackers using heavy artillery, known as "Big Bertha." After the war, eight of the eastern, southern, and northern forts were rebuilt, while the western installations were decommissioned. In World War II, the forts once again became central to the fighting, particularly Fort Eben-Emael, which was captured by German airborne troops on May 10, 1940, facilitating the attackers' advance.

Fort d'Embourg is situated in the city of Liège in the district of the same name in the Walloon region of Belgium. It is located at an elevation of approximately 216 meters above sea level.

Today, Fort d'Embourg is accessible to visitors and can be explored.
