Fortifications of Liège-Fort de Chaudfontaine
Fort de Chaudfontaine is one of the modern fortifications erected around the Belgian city of Liège in the late 19th century. As part of a comprehensive defense ring, it bears witness to the military architecture of its time and is now an accessible historical monument.
History+
The fortifications around Liège, including Fort de Chaudfontaine, were built between 1880 and 1890 under the direction of Belgian General Henri Alexis Brialmont. These installations, located approximately seven kilometers from the city center, were constructed from the then-new material concrete and equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry. At the beginning of World War I, they were considered impregnable, yet German attackers quickly overcame them with heavy artillery. After the war, the eastern, southern, and northern forts were rebuilt, while the western installations were decommissioned. In World War II, the Liège fortress once again played a role when German troops attacked the Belgian defenses.
