Fortifications of Liège-Fort de Fléron
Fortress Liège-Fort de Fléron is a structure situated at an elevation of approximately 260 meters above sea level in Liège, Belgium. It was part of the ring of fortifications around Liège and dates from the late 19th century.
History+
The first modern fortresses around Liège, including Fort de Fléron, were constructed between 1880 and 1890 under General Henri Alexis Brialmont. These forts, with Fléron being one of the larger installations, were positioned approximately seven kilometers from the city center and built entirely from concrete, equipped with weaponry. Although considered impregnable at the start of World War I, they quickly succumbed to German attackers and their heavy artillery, such as the “Big Bertha.” After the war, the eight forts facing south, east, and north were rebuilt, while the western installations were decommissioned. Fort de Fléron, which again played a role in World War II, was partially overbuilt after the conflicts.
