Fortifications of Liège-Fort de Tancrémont

The first modern fortifications around Liège were built between 1880 and 1890 under the direction of General Henri Alexis Brialmont. These twelve forts, located about seven kilometers from the city center, were constructed from the then-new building material concrete and equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry. Although considered impregnable at the start of World War I, they were quickly destroyed by German attackers using heavy artillery, such as the "Dicke Bertha." After the war, eight of the southern, eastern, and northern forts were rebuilt. The western installations were decommissioned. Instead, four new forts, including Tancrémont, were constructed in the east, now approximately 20 kilometers from Liège. In World War II, particularly during the Western Campaign starting on May 10, 1940, the Belgian fortresses again came under attack. While Fort Eben-Emael fell quickly, other installations like Battice and Aubin-Neufchâteau resisted longer until they were captured on May 22, 1940.
