Lyutitsa (Лютица) Fortress
The Lyutitsa Fortress, one of the largest and best-preserved fortifications in the eastern Rhodopes, rises near the town of Ivaylovgrad. Its impressive size and the still visible remains bear witness to its former significance.
History+
The first written mentions of Lyutitsa Fortress date back to the 9th century. A document from Emperor Leo VI, who reigned between 886 and 912, confirms the existence of the complex at that time. Originally, the fortress covered an area of 26,000 square meters and was equipped with twelve towers, eight of which are still preserved today. The walls once reached a considerable height of up to ten meters.
