History+
The origins of Magdeburg's fortifications date back to the 13th century when the first city walls were built. With the advent of firearms in the 15th and 16th centuries, these structures were modernized and expanded, including the initial fortification of the Elbe front and the construction of new gates with gun towers. These defenses proved effective during sieges such as those in 1550/51 and 1629. During the Thirty Years' War, the fortress was further expanded under Swedish command, but neglect of the southern front led to the city's capture and the demolition of its defenses in 1631. Under Brandenburg-Prussian rule, Elector Frederick William ordered the reconstruction in 1666, which, in several phases until around 1740, resulted in a system of bastions, redoubts, and forts.
