History+
The origins of Magdeburg's fortifications date back to the 13th century. With the development of firearms in the 15th and 16th centuries, modernizations were carried out, including the construction of a second city wall and the fortification of the Elbe riverfront. These installations proved effective during sieges in the 16th and 17th centuries. After its destruction during the Thirty Years' War under Swedish command and subsequent demolition by imperial troops, the fortress was rebuilt and expanded from 1666 under Brandenburg-Prussian rule.
