History+
The origins of Magdeburg's fortifications can be traced back to the 13th century. These structures, particularly between 1450 and 1550, underwent expansion and modernization due to the development of firearms. This included the construction of a second city wall, the fortification of the Elbe riverfront, and the erection of new gates with gun towers. The fortress proved its resilience during sieges in 1550/51 and 1629. During the Thirty Years' War, the fortifications were expanded under Swedish command, but in 1631, imperial troops succeeded in capturing the city, after which the structures were razed.
