History+

The origins of Magdeburg's fortifications date back to the 13th century. Between 1450 and 1550, modernizations took place, including the construction of a second city wall and the fortification of the Elbe front. Despite these measures, the fortress was captured by imperial troops in 1631 during the Thirty Years' War and subsequently razed. Under Brandenburg-Prussian rule, reconstruction and further expansion began in 1666. In the 19th century, after its incorporation into the Kingdom of Westphalia under Napoleon, the fortress was further developed and withstood sieges.
