History+
Magdeburg's initial fortifications date back to the 13th century. Between 1450 and 1550, due to the development of firearms, the defenses were expanded, including a second city wall and the fortification of the Elbe front. This fortress withstood sieges in 1550/51 and 1629. During the Thirty Years' War, it was further developed under Swedish command, but a neglected southern front led to its capture by imperial troops in 1631 and the subsequent demolition of its structures. After the war, Elector Frederick William ordered its restoration in 1666. Under Prince Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessau, a belt of eleven bastions was created starting in 1702, followed by another eleven bastions and other works.
