Monyak Fortress, one of the most significant medieval structures in the Rhodope Mountains, stands on a rocky outcrop. Its strategic location and size bear witness to its former military importance.
History+
Monyak Fortress was constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries. It played a crucial role in monitoring access to the "Zhelezna Vrata" pass and the medieval city located near the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist. In 1206, the fortress was besieged by Crusaders during the Fourth Crusade. The coronation of Henry, brother of the deceased Baldwin of Flanders, as the second and last emperor of the Latin Empire took place here.

Monyak Fortress is located in Bulgaria, in the Kardzhali district, near the city of Kardzhali. It stands at an elevation of approximately 452 meters above sea level.
