The island of Munkholmen was used as an execution site as early as 997, during the founding of Trondheim under King Olav Tryggvason. In the early 12th century, Benedictine monks established a monastery on the island, which remained until the Reformation. Construction of a fortress began in 1658 and was completed in 1661. From then on, the fortress was also used as a state prison and remained in operation until 1893. During World War II, Munkholmen served as an anti-aircraft station.
