Fort de Cognelée is one of the nine fortresses that once protected the city of Namur. The complex was built at the end of the 19th century.
History+
Fort de Cognelée was constructed between 1888 and 1892 as part of the fortifications of Namur, designed according to the plans of General Henri Alexis Brialmont. It faced its first test in August 1914 when it was bombarded during the German invasion. Around 1930, the fort underwent modernization and an expansion of its armament. In May 1940, it again came under German attack and surrendered on May 19th. After World War II, the fort was not rebuilt.
