The remains of the fortress can be visited

The Paliokastro Fortress, also known as Old Navarino, stands on a rocky outcrop near Pylos in Greece. This medieval complex once guarded the Bay of Navarino.

History+

The origins of Paliokastro Fortress date back to the late 13th century, when Nicholas II of Saint Omer, Lord of Thebes in the Principality of Achaea, initiated its construction. In the mid-14th century, it served as a base for the Genoese in their conflict with Venice. Later, in the 1360s, it was occupied by Marie de Bourbon as part of her claims to the throne and by 1381, it fell to the Navarrese Company. Venice acquired the fortress in 1423 from the Prince of Achaea, Centurione II Zaccaria. Following Venice's defeat in the Battle of Modon in 1500, Paliokastro fell to the Ottomans.
