Rosenberg Fortress
Rosenberg Fortress, situated above the Upper Franconian town of Kronach, is an example of the evolution of defensive architecture in Germany. This complex, surrounded by Baroque fortifications, is one of Bavaria's best-preserved fortresses and, in its history dating back to the 13th century, was never forcibly conquered.
History+
The origins of Rosenberg Fortress can be traced back to the 13th century. The complex was continuously expanded by the Prince-Bishops of Bamberg, for whom it was one of two state fortresses, alongside Forchheim Fortress. It evolved from a medieval defensive castle into a Renaissance palace and later into a fortress complex. Its construction phases reflect the development of military architecture.
