Skansin Fortress
Skansin Fortress is a bulwark in the Faroe Islands. It was built to defend against pirate attacks.
History+
The origins of Skansin Fortress date back to 1580, when Magnus Heinason had the complex built to protect Tórshavn from pirates after he himself had almost fallen victim to an attack. In 1780, it was expanded. From 1940, Skansin served as a military base for British forces.

Skansin Fortress is located in Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, which belong to Denmark. It is situated on an elevated position directly at the harbor, approximately 7 meters above sea level.
On site+
On the grounds, two cannons from the British occupation period as well as older Danish cannons are still visible. A lighthouse, the Skansin Lighthouse, guides ships. Its location provides a viewpoint over the city and the island of Nólsoy.
