On a plateau in the Burgas region of Bulgaria lies the fortress of Sozopol-Malkoto kale, a historical defensive structure. It stands as a prime example of ancient and late antique fortification art and is considered the most thoroughly researched fortress within an extensive defensive ring.

History+

The origins of the Sozopol-Malkoto kale fortress date back a long way. Archaeological excavations between 1973 and 1975 revealed two main construction phases. The first structure was built as early as the 8th century BC by the Thracian tribe of the Skirmiani. Finds of pottery, oil lamps, and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic sculptures attest to an early and permanent settlement.
