Tønsberg Fortress, a historic complex in Norway, majestically overlooks the Østlandet region. It stands as a testament to medieval architecture and played a pivotal role in Norway's history, particularly as a coronation site for kings and a significant trade hub.

History+

The origins of Tønsberg date back to 871, making it one of Norway's oldest cities. According to Snorri Sturluson, it was founded before the Battle of Hafrsfjord under King Harald I. In the 13th century, King Haakon Haakonsson had Tunsberghus Castle built on this strategically important site. The fortress was the scene of significant events, including a five-month siege by King Sverre Sigurdsson in 1201. Later, it served as a residence for King Magnus Lagabøter and his wife Ingeborg of Denmark. King Haakon V Magnusson died here in 1319, and in 1335, King Magnus Eriksson married Blanche of Namur at the fortress. In 1503, during the collapse of the Kalmar Union, the complex was destroyed by Swedish soldiers and local farmers.
