In Torgau, Saxony, the Torgau-Fort Zinna Fortress evolved from a medieval city wall and was expanded into a fortification. Today, a part of the complex houses a correctional facility.

History+

The origins of the Torgau Fortress date back to the Middle Ages when a city wall encircled the town. In the 17th and 18th centuries, this wall was extended. By order of Napoleon, construction began in 1811 under King Friedrich August I to develop it into a Saxon fortress, intended as a military base for the Russian campaign. After the Wars of Liberation, Torgau fell to Prussia in 1815, leading to further reinforcement of the fortress. However, it was abandoned in 1889 and largely demolished in the subsequent decades.
