Trsat Castle

The origins of Trsat Fortress likely date back to Roman times, when a fortification existed on this site. Later, the Croats took over the complex. In 799, a significant battle took place here, when the army of the Frankish commander Erich was decisively defeated by the Croats. After a long period without recorded events, Trsat fell to the Princes of Krk, later the Frankopan, in the 13th century through a donation. During the division of the Frankopan possessions in 1449, Trsat went to Prince Martin. In 1527, the fortress was captured by the advancing Turks, but was later recaptured by the army of the Military Frontier, freeing numerous Croatian prisoners. Through marriage, Trsat came into the possession of the Princes of Zrin and later under the rule of the Viennese Imperial Court when the Croatian Military Frontier was established. Archduke Charles of Austria-Burgau pledged Trsat to Captain Raab of Senj in 1582, who carried out renovations. After being returned to the Frankopan, the fortress was again incorporated into the Military Frontier and gradually fell into disrepair, becoming a ruin by the early 19th century. In 1826, Count Laval Nugent, commander of the Austrian Littoral, acquired the ruin and had it converted into a magnificent residence. He furnished the rooms with stylish furniture and works of art and established a painting gallery. After his death in 1862, Count Nugent was buried in the “Heroes' Peace” crypt at Trsat.

Trsat Fortress is located in Rijeka, in the Primorsko-goranska županija (Littoral–Mountain County) in the Jadranska Hrvatska (Adriatic Croatia) region, Croatia. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 124 meters above sea level.
