The Tsepina Fortress, an impressive historical complex, is perched on a conical hill in the Rhodope Mountains. Located near the village of Dorkovo, in the Pazardzhik district of Bulgaria, it is one of the most significant historical sites in the region, offering a fascinating glimpse into past eras.

History+

The origins of Tsepina Fortress date back to the 9th century, with evidence of fortifications from that period. Archaeological excavations have also uncovered remains of a Thracian settlement, as well as foundations of churches, water reservoirs, a basilica, and dwellings. The fortress acquired its current form between the 11th and 13th centuries. After the fall of the First Bulgarian Empire in the early 11th century, Tsepina fell to the Byzantines but was later liberated by Emperor Kaloyan (1197-1207). In the 13th century, it served as the residence for Aleksiy Slav, a nephew of Tsar Kaloyan, who ruled over the Rhodope Mountains at that time.
