Varberg Fortress

The origins of the fortress date back to the late 13th century. After the assassination of Danish King Erik V in 1286, his cousin Jakob Nielsen, Count of Halland, came under suspicion. To protect himself from potential persecution, he began building a castle in 1287, which was completed around 1300. The complex was built on a cliff above the harbor, a strategically important point. In the following decades, the fortress experienced a turbulent history with numerous changes of ownership. In 1366, Danish King Waldemar IV conquered the complex, which then remained under Danish rule for about 300 years. During the Count's Feud in 1535, the Lübeck military commander Marx Meyer was imprisoned here, who briefly transformed the fortress into a resistance nest before he was overpowered and executed in 1536. Military developments required constant adaptations, and so the fortress was reinforced over time with palisades and moats. During the Seven Years' Northern War, the fortress changed hands several times until it fell back to Denmark in the Peace of Stettin. From 1588, extensive expansion work was carried out under the direction of the Dutch architect Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder and later his son, who made the fortress one of the most modern in Europe by 1618. However, it never had to prove its military capability. In the Peace of Brömsebro in 1645, Halland and thus the fortress fell to Sweden. After the Thirty Years' War, the fortress served as a prison from 1830, housing up to 500 inmates between 1848 and 1880, before it was closed in 1880. Around 1920, extensive renovation work began, during which casemates and battlements were uncovered, and the fortress has been used as a museum ever since.
