Vaxholm Fortress
On an island east of the Swedish town of Vaxholm stands Vaxholm Fortress. Originally built in the 16th century, it served to defend Stockholm and is now an accessible museum.
History+
Gustav Vasa ordered the construction of Vaxholm Fortress in 1548 to protect the Swedish capital, Stockholm, from attacks from the east. In 1612, it was attacked by Danish troops, and in 1719, it was assaulted by the Russian Navy. The fortress acquired its current appearance through reconstruction work carried out between 1833 and 1863. Since the mid-19th century, Vaxholm has lost its military significance.
