Museum

Wilhelmstein Fortress, an artificial island in Lake Steinhude, was created in the 18th century for military reasons. It once served to defend the small state of Schaumburg-Lippe and is now used as a museum.

History+

Between 1761 and 1767, Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe had Wilhelmstein Fortress built to protect his small county from annexations. The star-shaped complex, originally with 16 secondary islands, was created through years of embankment work by the population, who brought sand, gravel, and stones. A specially dug canal, the Hagenburger Kanal, facilitated transport. The fortress housed a modern artillery and engineering school that trained officers and soldiers, including the later General Gerhard von Scharnhorst.
